Aspect ratio
The relationship of width and height. When an image is displayed on different screens, the aspect ratio must be kept the same to avoid "stretching" in either the vertical or horizontal direction. For most current monitors, this ratio is 4:3. For HDTV, the ratio is generally 16:9.

Contrast
The measurement of the difference in light intensity between the brightest white pixel and the darkest black pixel.

Frame rate
The number of frames or images that are projected or displayed per second.

 Monochrome
Only displaying one color or multiple shades of a single color. Also, refers to a black and white display.

 Pixel
Spawned from combining the words picture and element (pix-el), a pixel is basically is the smallest addressable unit on a display screen or bitmapped image.

QXGA
(2048 x 1536), 1.33x aspect ratio, Standard

Resolution
Refers to the amount of pixels that can be displayed on an LCD screen.

Scan rate
The number of times per second an image capture or display device samples its field of vision

 Sub-pixel
Pixels are divided into three horizontal sections, these are called sub-pixels. A pixel has 3 sub pixels, one red, one green and one blue.

SVGA
Refers to "super video graphics array", a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 800 x 600, creating a 1.33x aspect ratio (Standard).

SXGA
Refers to "super extended graphics array", a type of screen resolution. This resolution can measure 1280 x 1024 (1.25x aspect ratio, Standard) or 1280 x 960 (1.33x aspect ratio, Standard).

SXGA+
Refers to "super extended graphics array, plus", a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 1400 x 1050, creating a 1.33x aspect ratio (Standard). This resolution is common on 14- and 15-inch laptop screens, and has a widescreen cousin, WSXGA+.

UXGA

VGA
Refers to "video graphics array", a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 640 x 480, creating a 1.33x aspect ratio (Standard). Related to the VGA connector used on many external displays of various resolutions.

WSVGA
Refers to "wide super video graphics array," a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 1024 x 600, creating a 1.71x aspect ratio (Wide).

WSXGA
Refers to "wide super extended graphics array," a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 1280 x 854, creating a 1.50x aspect ratio (Wide).

WSXGA+
Refers to "wide super extended graphics array, plus," a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 1680 x 1050, creating a 1.60x aspect ratio (Wide).

WUXGA
Refers to "wide ultra extended graphics array," a type of screen resolution. This resolution measures 1920 x 1200, creating a 1.60x apect ratio (Wide).

WXGA
Refers to "wide extended graphics array," a type of screen resolution. This resolution can measure 1152 x 768 (1.50x aspect ratio, Wide), 1280 x 768 (1.66x aspect ratio, Wide), 1280 x 800 (1.60x aspect ratio, Wide), or 1366 x 768 (1.78x aspect ratio, Wide).

WXGA+
