Dead pixel

An occurrence when the pixel of an LCD screen shorts and remains permanently open or closed. There are two occurrences which define a dead pixel: a "lit" pixel, which appears as a randomly placed white, red, blue and/or green dot on a dark background or a "missing" pixel which appears as a black dot on light-colored background. LCD makers and laptop manufacturers have limits to how many dead pixels are allowed on a screen before they'll accept it back for a refund or exchange. For examples of various dead pixel policies, see our Quality Standards page. One simple way of determining if you have a dead pixel on your screen is to try one of many available dead pixel tests found online.
